‘Nationwide protests if Dharmendra Pradhan does not resign by 5 pm’, warns Dipke
The Kolkata Police have significantly intensified their crackdown on traffic violators following directives from the new state administration. In a concentrated three-day drive from Monday to Wednesday evening, a total of 3,302 individuals were caught for riding motorcycles without helmets or engaging in "triple riding." The enforcement reached its peak on Tuesday with 1,939 arrests, following 722 on Monday and 641 by Wednesday evening. This aggressive naka checking is part of a broader "Zero Tolerance" policy aimed at restoring road discipline and reducing fatalities across the city’s busy intersections.
Data released by Lalbazar indicates that the Headquarters Traffic Guard in Central Kolkata recorded the highest number of violations with 290 cases in the first two days alone. This was closely followed by the Metiaburuz area with 243 cases, along with significant numbers from the East and Jorabagan Traffic Guards. The police have emphasized that these drives are not merely punitive but are intended to break the habit of reckless riding, which often escalates during night hours. Officers at checkpoints have been instructed to maintain strict vigil against speeding and multi-passenger violations on two-wheelers.
Beyond traffic enforcement, the city’s police headquarters has issued new guidelines to improve overall law and order and tactical coordination. Lalbazar has ordered the commencement of a "Master Parade" in every division every 15 days. This decision stems from a perceived lack of teamwork and crowd management skills observed during recent duties. The mandatory parades will include specialized training sessions on controlling public disturbances and managing large gatherings, ensuring that personnel of all ranks are better prepared for high-pressure situations.
